Synthesis of the title compound from 4-methoxyaniline was accomplished in three steps. The structure was supported by spectroscopic data and unambiguously confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21 with unit cell dimensions a = 9.9349(8), b = 6.3377(5), c = 10.5783(10) Å, β = 97.752(3)°, V = 659.97(10) Å, Z = 2.

(E)-3-(2,3-Dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one

The mol-ecular conformation of the title compound, C(18)H(18)O(5), is stabilized by a strong intra-molecular hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. The C=C double bond displays an E configuration while the carbonyl group shows an S-cis configuration relative to the double bond. The dihedral angle between the two rings is 15.0 (1)°.

In the title compound, C(17)H(17)NO(2), the phenyl-ene rings are nearly coplanar [dihedral angle 7.3 (1)°]. The acetamido group is twisted out of the plane of the aromatic ring in order to form an N-H⋯O hydrogen bond to the acetamido group of an adjacent mol-ecule, generating a helical chain running along the b axis.
